Learning without the jargon

The idea for Biscuits & Bytes came via various conversations with people in the village community and how a lot of people were struggling with their technical devices; particularly phones.

At the time, I was between jobs so I thought I could turn this into a small commercial venture to keep the wolf from the door, however, i’ve subsequently secured a new job so the pressure is off for this to be an income stream! So, it made me think that by asking learners for a fee, we can cover the costs of hiring the hall, buying a few biscuits, and pay for perhaps a couple of youngsters to earn some money by helping directly with the learners. There really aren’t many jobs in Motcombe where someone under 20 can earn a few quid for a couple of hours work, and what better way to give them an opportunity to earn, than to ask them to help advise in what they tend to know best!

The pace of the classes will be leisurely, so we won’t be romping through instruction manuals; moreover I plan a 25-30 minute demonstration/talk, then some proper, hands-on practical examples of doing what we’ve been through. Finally, we’ll round off each week with a Quesions and Answers session where we’ll select some of the issues people are facing and go through the answers together.

It won’t be a ‘tech surgery’ for people to bring all their problems to; but that is something I will be able to manage through some additional sessions I plan to hold, and if people really have a need for a lot of help (like my Mum; who seems to want me to fix every bit of tech in her house when I visit or phone) then we can arrange private help sessions.
